50) Cancel Culture Conundrum…
dictionary.com defines cancel culture as “the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done something considered objectionable or offensive.”
I have quite a list of what I consider objectionable people and companies. Top of my list is, of course, my refusal to support any person or organization that endorses Trump. Goodbye to Home Depot, Facebook, Instagram, Kroger, handful of low rank celebrities, etc., etc., etc.
The path is a lot rockier when it comes to separating an artist from their art. There are a multitude of creators who are terrible people and espouse repellent ideas, yet create wonderful pieces of art.
There are numerous authors and artists that have displayed anti-Semitic, racist, and sexist sentiments. There are many creators of the past who have gotten a “pass” because awareness of their bigotry has faded while their works endure. T.S. Eliot, Roald Dahl, Ezra Pound, and H.P. Lovecraft are just a few of wrong-minded bigots whose works still enjoy a following.
J.K.Rowling is a great writer. I absolutely love her work. But her transphobic issues are embarrassing and, I believe, contrary to the inclusive message of much of her own writing. I find it strangely ironic that Ms. Rowling chose a transgender pseudonym to write her Cormoran Strike novels.
