67) Joining the National Cartoonists Society…

SPEED BUMP by Dave Coverly 7-17-2002

Some years ago I was the winning ebay bidder on an original Speed Bump panel by Dave Coverly. I really enjoy Coverly’s style and sense of humor.

A short time after winning the panel, I was surprised and delighted to receive an email from Dave Coverly himself. He explained that the panel I won had inadvertantly gotten away from his possession and it had special meaning for him, as it featured a nod to his daughter. He asked if I would consider exchanging the panel for another. I was happy to do so. The panel I received in exchange is posted above.

In the course of our email correspondence, I told Dave about myself. As he was on the Board of the National Cartoonists Society, Dave suggested that I apply for membership. I had previously (erroneously) thought that membership was only open to comic strip artists, but was glad to hear that the Society had expanded to embrace other comic art disciplines. My tenure in the animation field made me eligible. I submitted a portfolio and was accepted for membership.

I have since attended a number of NCS events and participate, when I can, in the Los Angeles NCS chapter. It’s a great organization, though I am often reduced to fanboy awe by all the great talent of my fellow members.
