84) RUDY…

RUDY by William Overgard 11-28-1985

William Overgard (1926-1990) was a multitalented artist and writer who got his start assisting Milton Caniff on Steve Canyon. Overgard later took over (and considerably enhanced) the adventure comic strip Steve Roper. He also wrote novels and scripts for a variety of different projects.

For me, his greatest work was RUDY, a strip about an ex-vaudevillian talking chimpanzee making his way in Hollywood. It was a superbly written and drawn feature that, unfortunately, never found its audience. It only ran for about five years. There is a nice collection of the strips in a book titled, RUDY in Hollywood, that might be found at used book stores.
