199) The Neighbors…

The Neighbors by George Clark 12-4-1971

George Rife Clark (1902-1981) created two successful panel features. In 1929 he began Side Glances for the Newspaper Enterprise Association Syndicate. NEA promoted this slice-of-life panel by boasting that Clark “combines splendid art ability with the characteristics of a trained reporter.”

In 1939 Clark moved to the Chicago Tribune-New York Daily News Syndicate, where he created The Neighbors. This new feature was essentially the same as Side Glances, which NEA owned and had reassigned to cartoonist William Galbraith Crawford (1894-1978). Crawford had a similar loose, organic style as Clark.
