Baby Blues by Jerry Scott & Rick Kirkman 12-8-1991

The themes of Baby Blues by Jerry Scott & Rick Kirkman really resonated with me when it premiered in 1990, just a couple of years after my daughter was born. The strip successfully tapped into that roller-coaster of parenthood and has continued to be fresh and entertaining as the Wanda & Darryl MacPherson family has expanded from one child to three children (Zoe, Hammie, & Wren, in that order). While the strip has been running for over thirty years, the characters have only aged a few years since first-born Zoe appeared at the debut.

I really enjoy Rick Kirkman’s cartoony drawing style. I know he used to draw with a black pencil, rather than ink, but I don’t know if he still does in this age of computer art. Jerry Scott, who writes Baby Blues and Zits, is a fine cartoonist in his own right. He did a very nice interpretation of Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy for a few years before handing the property over to Guy Gilchrist. I had previously posted (8-31-2020) a sample of Scott’s Nancy work.
