Elliot Caplin, brother of Al Capp, had an idea for a comic strip that centered around the misadventures of a 1500 year old witch named Broom-Hilda. He had Harvey Kurtzman draw up some sample strips. Caplin failed to sell the project, but didn’t let go of the idea. Through some mutual acquaintances he met Russell Myers, a former Hallmark Cards artist, and magic was born. Caplin handled the business end of the project and gave Myers full creative control.

Broom-Hilda premiered in 1970 and is still going strong.
