290) Nubbin…

Original Nubbin by Burnett & Boltinoff 12-1-1972

Nubbin, which premiered in 1958, was written by Jim Burnett and drawn by George Crenshaw. The main character was a Huckleberry Finn-like farm boy who talked to animals…and they responded. They all lived in an unnamed rural setting.

A year into syndication, the strip introduced Twink, a young girl who was the perfect foil for Nubbin.

In 1971, artist Crenshaw left the strip, replaced by Henry Boltinoff, a veteran cartoonist who did a lot of humorous work for DC Comics.

Nubbin was a nicely drawn feature with “cute” jokes that were never particularly uproarious. It ran until 1987, a decent 29 year run for a relatively unremarkable strip.
