294) Morty Meekly…
Dick Cavalli (1923-1997) was a successful gag cartoonist who sold comic panels to many of the most popular magazines of his time.
In 1956, Cavalli created the comic strip Morty Meekle for the Newspaper Enterprise Association Syndicate.
Morty Meekle was a gag-a-day feature about the travails of Morty, an office worker, and his interactions with the supporting cast of characters, which included his girlfriend, Jill Wortle.
Jill had a kid brother named Winthrop who eventually took over the strip much in the way Nancy took over Ernie Bushmiller’s Fritzi Ritz comic strip. Pithy observations from the mouths of children have often proved popular with comic strip readers.
In 1966, the comic strip dropped the adult characters and was renamed Winthrop. This new incarnation ran until 1994.
