Herb and Jamaal by Stephen Bentley launched in 1989, distributed by Creators Syndicate.

The strip revolves around long time friends Herb Johnson (former gas works technician) and Jamaal J. Jamaal (former NBA center for the fictional Phazers basketball team), who have pooled their resources to run a diner together.

Principle supporting characters include Herb’s wife Sarah, daughter Uhuru, son Ezekiel, and his abrasive mother-in-law Eula. Jamaal is single, but pines for the evasive Yolanda. Other regular characters often turn up at the diner.

Stephen Bentley’s style is clean and precise, accompanying gentle sit-com style humor.
