237) Laugh It Hoff…

Original Comic Art by Syd Hoff

Syd Hof (1912-2004) was a prolific cartoonist and children’s book author. His cartoons appeared in a number of popular magazines such as The New Yorker, Esquire, and Look. The New Yorker alone published 571 of his panels.

Hoff also created two syndicated comic strips: Tuffy (1939-1949) and Laugh It Off (1958-1978).

Syd Hoff is probably best known for the over 60 books he wrote and illustrated for HarperCollins I Can Read series for beginning readers. His Danny and the Dinosaur sold over 10 million copies.

Under the pseudonym A. Redfield, Hoff contributed to leftist newspapers and magazines including The Daily Worker and New Masses. Though scrutinized by the FBI, Hoff was never charged or blacklisted because of his politics.
