238) Captain Easy…

Original Captain Easy by Leslie Turner 6-30-1957

Cartoonist Roy Crane created the classic comic strip Wash Tubbs in 1924. The feature began as a joke-a-day strip, but soon transformed into an action/adventure feature with continuity.

Wash Tubbs was a somewhat nerdy little fellow with an eye for adventure and the young ladies. In 1929 Roy Crane introduced a tough guy sidekick for Tubbs named Captain Easy. This scrappy companion eventually began to dominate the strip and was given the lead in the Sunday strips in 1933. By the time Crane left the feature in 1943, Wash Tubbs was diminished to a supporting character in the adventures of Captain Easy.

Roy Crane went on to create Buz Sawyer (which he fully owned) and left Captain Easy (owned by the NEA Syndicate) in the very capable hands of his assistant Leslie Turner. Turner guided the strip (with the help of assistants) until his retirement in 1969.

Captain Easy continued on under Turner’s assistant, Bill Crooks, until the feature was discontinued in 1988.
