255) Charles Rodrigues…

Original Casey by Charles Rodrigues 12-18-1977

I think I first saw the work of Charles Rodrigues (1926-2004) in the pages of National Lampoon. I loved his style and grotesque sense of humor. He began selling his cartoons in around 1950, first to low end girlie magazines, eventually graduating to more mainstream magazines such as Playboy, Esquire, TV Guide, Stereo Review, etc.

His work appeared in the first issue of National Lampoon in 1970 and he continued to supply his warped humor to the magazine for well into its run.

Rodrigues also created three comic features for the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate: Eggs Benedict, Casey the Cop, and Charlie.

In sharp contrast to his wild and often outrageous cartoons, Rodrigues was said to be a rather straight-laced and conservative person.
