Irving Joel Rafsky (1900-1970) was initially so embarrassed to be a cartoonist that he adopted the pseudonym of Jay Irving to hide his identity from his family. He finally legally changed his name when he felt secure enough in his chosen profession.

Jay Irving is best known for his comic strip Pottsy, which ran from 1955 to 1970. Pottsy was a kindly, over weight beat cop who interacted with characters on his patrol and was cowed by his overbearing superior, known only as Sarge.
