265) Breger…

Original Mister Breger by Dave Breger 2-5-1961

David Breger (1908-1970) created the syndicated comic strip Mister Breger. This comic strip followed a similar trajectory as Hubert from my previous blog post.

In 1941, Army soldier Breger sold a series of comic panels to The Saturday Evening Post that humorously reflected Army life, titled Private Breger. The comic proved popular enough that Breger was asked by the editors of Yank, the Army Weekly, to do a version of the comic panels for their publication, which Breger titled G.I. Joe. Breger is credited with creating this term for the Army foot soldier.

King Features Syndicate soon signed Breger to produce a daily panel of Private Breger for domestic distribution, which ran from 1942 to 1945. After the war the King Feature panel was retitled Mister Breger as the main character returned to civilian life. Mister Breger ran from 1945 to 1970, ending when David Breger died.
