Smokey Stover by Bill Holman 1-26-1936

Bill Holman’s Smokey Stover, a popular screwball comic strip that ran from 1935 to 1972, is all but forgotten today. Smokey, a firefighter, lived in a wacky world of bizarre sight gags, nonsense language, and corny puns. 

Some of his catchphrases, such as notary sojac, scram gravy ain’t wavey, and 1506 nix nix entered the lexicon, then faded from popularity…except for foo.

I still say foo to a lot of things.
