161) King Aroo…

King Aroo by Jack Kent 2-20-1960

John Wellington Kent, aka Jack Kent, (1920-1985) was a prolific cartoonist who wrote and illustrated forty children’s books and illustrated a score more written by other authors. His comic strip, King Aroo, ran from 1950 to 1965. King Aroo was the childlike ruler of Myopia, assisted by his more businesslike advisor Yupyop.

Though never a huge success with the public, King Aroo was very popular with comic strip devotees, who compared it with the likes of Pogo, Barnaby and Krazy Kat, siting the clever use of word play and irony.

Jack Kent didn’t have any formal artistic training, but his innate sense of design and bold execution made him one of the great cartoonists of the twentieth century.
