Frederick Burr Opper (1857-1937) was one of the pioneers of American newspaper comic strips. While his comic strip creations included Happy Hooligan (a free spirited hobo), And Her Name Was Maud ( a donkey who would kick people into the next county), and Alphonse & Gaston (an ever-polite couple), he was also a noted political cartoonist and book/magazine illustrator. Opper was much revered by the cartoonist community of his time.

Happy Hooligan first appeared in 1900 and ran until 1932. Opper retired in 1934 when his eyesight began to fail.
