289) Gasoline Alley…

Original Gasoline Alley by Frank King 4-19-1946

Debuting in 1918, Gasoline Alley is the oldest comic strip still appearing in newspapers (and online) with new material. Frank King (1883-1969) created the feature which, at first, centered around a group of friends (Walt, Doc, Avery, and Bill) discussing automobiles.

The tone of the strip changed when lead character Walt Wallet found an abandoned baby boy. Walt decided to raise the foundling and named him Skeezix.

Gasoline Alley is unique in that the characters actually age as time passes, only pausing briefly in the aging process during the tenure of cartoonist Dick Moores’ work on the strip.

The sapling that was the Wallet family tree has grown to a large, many branched mighty oak with a slew of new generations and characters. Walt Wallet and Skeezix are still featured in the strip, but they are now very old men.

Cartoonist Jim Scancarelli currently produces Gasoline Alley with a very engaging graphic style.
