233) Grandma…

Grandma by Charles Kuhn 12-29-1965

Charles Harris Kuhn (1892-1989) created Grandma in 1947 when he was fifty-five years old. He had been a successful editorial cartoonist, but felt inspired to create a comic strip that paid homage to his mother.

“My mother was always full of pep and vigor. One time, at seventy-five years of age, she dressed up in my old Navy uniform, danced a jig and played a piece on her French harp just to help the neighborhood kids put on a backyard show. My comic Grandma, in spirit at least, is my own beloved mother.”

When Kuhn retired in 1969, the strip came to an end.

When I was a child I enjoyed the cartoon styling of the strip and often wished I had such a loving and playful Grandma.
