In 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen launched the comic strip Grand Avenue, distributed by United Feature Syndicate.

The strip focuses on six year old fraternal twins Gabby and Michael Macfarlane who are being raised by their grandmother Kate. They also regularly interact with their teacher Mr. Damikolas, friend P.J., and other characters in their neighborhood. Gabby tends to be overly ambitious and conniving whereas Michael is more sensitive and artistic. Grandma Kate is an active senior citizen who is kept on her toes by her rambunctious and challenging grandchildren.

In 2005 Breen began to collaborate on the strip with fellow cartoonist Mike Thompson. Thompson officially became a co-creator of the strip in 2009 before completely taking over in 2016.
