264) Hubert…

Original Hubert by Dick Wingert 4-20-1985

Hubert was created by Dick Wingert in 1942 for the American Army magazine, Stars and Stripes. Originally Hubert was just an illustration with an accompanying phrase, but evolved into a single panel comic. Hubert was a stereotypical beleaguered soldier, much like Sad Sack, Private Breger or Beetle Bailey.

After the war Wingert signed with King Features Syndicate and transitioned Hubert into civilian life, adding wife Trudy, daughter Elli and dog Freddy to the strip. The first syndicated comic strip of Hubert appeared in 1945 and continued running until Dick Wingert’s death in 1993.
